Botanical white pearls from Ancão
Algarve ‘Botanical white pearls from Ancão’ at Almancil Students’ Drawings Exhibition within the Emc2 Project
The Emc2 project – ‘Exploring white crowberry coastal habitats’– is an educational project about the white crowberry plant, whose edible white fruits resemble ‘pearls’.
This plant is only found in Portugal and Spain, and as its distribution range is declining, it is crucial to raise awareness and foster the conservation of its populations at wild.
Within this project, an Exhibition of Drawings by Students from the Almancil School Group’s Elementary School, showcasing drawings from the Ancão area white crowberry plants, can be visited from September 16th to October 18th, 2025, at the Almancil Municipal Library Campus.
These drawings were made by students after an educational field trip in May to the coastal area within the Ancão Forest Management Plan (Algarve).
Emc2 Project Coordinator, M. Alexandra Abreu Lima (Researcher at MARE and INIAV, I.P.), would like to thank the teachers and the Almancil Educational Community for their participation, the support of the Municipality of Loulé, and the collaboration of the Ancão Forest Management Plan.
The Emc2 Project is funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT, Portugal), through the strategic projects UIDB/04292/2020 and UIDP/04292/2020 granted to MARE – Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, and project LA/P/0069/2020 granted to the Associated Laboratory ARNET – Aquatic Research Network.
