August in Portimão: A Month of Elite Sports and Community Fitness
Summer is in full swing, and Portimão is gearing up for an incredible month of sports! As your local Algarve community magazine, we are excited to share a diverse August agenda ranging from beach sports and open-water swimming to international futsal and padel tournaments. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, there are plenty of ways to spectate or break a sweat this month.
Futsal Fever at Portimão Arena
The future of futsal will be on display during the Youth Masters from August 26 to 29, gathering around 120 young players from across the Algarve. Following this, the International Masters Futsal (August 29-30) brings world-class action to the arena for the ultimate pre-season tournament. This elite competition will feature four powerhouse teams: Sporting CP (European champions), SL Benfica (National bi-champions), Palma Futsal (European vice-champions), and Jimbee Cartagena (Spanish bi-champions). Matches are scheduled for 11:00 and 15:00 each day, and you can grab your tickets online.

Padel and Tennis Thrills
Racket sports fans are in for a treat at the Municipal Tennis and Padel Complex. The action kicks off with a gruelling 24-hour Tennis and Padel Marathon on August 1 and 2, challenging players’ endurance and team spirit. Between August 5 and 9, the complex hosts two major, free-entry competitions: the Padel Portimão Open 10000 and the FIP Bronze Portimão. These tournaments will feature top national players alongside international athletes competing for world ranking points.

Beach Sports and Active Living at Praia da Rocha
With summer at its peak, Praia da Rocha takes centre stage as a hub of athletic activity. Spectators can enjoy free entry to the National Beach Volleyball Circuit (August 6-9), followed by the amateur HeliSands Beach Volleyball League (August 11-12) and the spectacular National Footvolley Championship (August 15-16).
If you want to stay fit by the sea, the Praia da Rocha Sports Area offers free, regular community activities all week long until September 12. Locals and visitors can join in on fitness, water aerobics, Zumba, Pilates, and yoga, or try out sports like beach soccer and Frisbee. Plus, don’t miss “Sábados by Decathlon” every Saturday at 10:00 to try out a new, surprise sports modality.
Making a Splash: Sea Races, Petanque, and River Descents
For open-water enthusiasts, the XXXV Praia da Rocha Sea Race takes place on August 1. On August 8, the action moves to Alvor for the XVI Alvor Sea Race, which features a 1,900-meter official race, a 700-meter promotional race, and a 200-meter kids’ event.

Other community highlights include the Intersócios Petanque Tournament at Jardim das Águas-Vivas on August 9. Finally, you can embrace local tradition with the XXIII Arade River Raft Descent on August 15 and 16. This fun-filled recreational journey takes participants down the river from Silves to the Clube Naval de Portimão using rafts, canoes, and kayaks.
