‘Fancy coming for a yomp on Sunday?’ the text from a work colleague read.

And so began our hiking adventures (and eventual romance), first in our native Wales and later in Madeira, Spain and Portugal. In fact, it was the Via Algarviana that first brought Harri and me here to Algarve in May 2015. I’d completed the London marathon a week before (my first and last) and we backpacked the entire 300 km in two weeks.

Eighteen months later, we were back to spend our first winter in Albufeira and ended up on RPT being interviewed about our Via Algarviana experience and the books we’ve written. We even met some of the trail’s founders, who were pretty impressed with our epic hike (they’d tackled the distance in shorter sections).

I’ve been writing for Tomorrow for just over a year now and during that time I’ve interviewed some incredibly talented and interesting people and had a lot of fun doing so. I’m probably the only contributor who mostly rocks up for interviews on foot but no-one seems to mind my dishevelled appearance.

Yes, I’m still passionate about hiking and – since I discovered online mapping – I’m a far more confident solo walker.

If you’re interested, I blog about hiking at tracyburton.co.uk
