Leaving school at 16, I never settled anywhere or forged a career. Going from one menial job to another, one location to the next, I always had itchy feet.

More influenced by my rebellious friends than by common sense, I was fascinated by the punk movement in the late 70s; hence I pursued the world of music and dance. At the age of 21, I decided to go on an adventure. “I will travel the world!” I declared. I set off with my purple rucksack and hit the road. Soon, discovering Portugal, I then started an everlasting love affair with this country.

Yo-yo-ing back and forth between the two countries; working the summers here in restaurants and bars, the winters in factories and supermarkets in the UK, it wasn’t until I had my child, Mara,22 years ago that I attempted to stay still. The UK seemed the sensible place to bring up my child, but the lure of Portugal was always there.

When Mara was seven, I came back and have been in the area of Aljezur ever since, cleaning for a living and now working for the Tomorrow magazine, but still with the ambition to travel the world!
