It’s an exciting time for food lovers in the Algarve! Our rich, authentic cuisine is gaining the global recognition it so rightly deserves, and our very own Portimão is taking centre stage in this culinary renaissance. From prestigious international awards to vibrant local celebrations, Portugal is cementing its status as a world-class gastronomic destination, with the Algarve leading the charge.

Portimão Hosts an International Celebration of Flavour
This October, Portimão has the honour of hosting the XXI Grand Chapter of the Algarve Gastronomy Confraternity, a landmark event that highlights the city’s role as a champion of gastronomy and local culture. Taking place from October 3rd to 5th, this event will bring together around 200 gastronomy experts and enthusiasts from Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Greece. Their mission is to celebrate our unique cuisine and to honour the very best products, chefs, and restaurants that make our region so special.
The dynamic program is a testament to the Algarve’s vibrant food scene. A highlight will be the ceremonial parade of the confrades (brotherhood members) through the city streets, accompanied by the music of the Sociedade Filarmónica de Portimão, on their way to a formal ceremony at the Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas. This celebration of tradition and community is a key component of the Confraternity’s mission to preserve and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Awarding the Best of the Best
The festivities will culminate in the prestigious IX Gala of the Order of Santa Maria de Ossónoba, held at the Hotel Algarve Casino. This gala is a public recognition of the talented and dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to elevate our regional culture. Awards will be presented in 13 categories, including “National Chef,” “Algarve Region Chef,” “Algarve Wine,” and “Algarve Restaurant,” honouring those who contribute to the high standard of Algarve, Portuguese, and even European gastronomy.

A Growing National Reputation
This local celebration is a perfect reflection of a larger, nationwide trend. Portugal’s culinary scene is experiencing a consistent path towards international excellence. The 2025 Michelin Guide, which was fully dedicated to Portugal for the first time, is a powerful testament to this journey.
The guide awarded a remarkable eight new stars, bringing the national total to 46 Michelin-starred restaurants. This recognition enhances the international reputation of our flavours and underscores the importance of gastronomy as a vital asset for tourism and the national economy. Experts note that Portuguese cuisine is gaining a global reputation thanks to its authenticity, creativity, and quality—qualities that are also celebrated right here in the Algarve. Events like the Grand Chapter in Portimão are vital, as they preserve our cultural heritage while helping to build the international competitiveness that earns such prestigious awards.
