Faro-born athlete now holds three gold medals, one silver and one bronze from five Deaflympics appearances
The Faro City Council hosted Joana Santos last Friday, celebrating the local athlete’s latest historic achievement: another Deaflympics title in judo, secured at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympic Games.
Across five appearances, Joana has amassed three gold medals, one silver and one bronze — in addition to many others earned in various competitions — marking an exceptional sporting career that places her among Portugal’s most decorated Deaflympic athletes.
In a reception noted for the simplicity and sincerity that define Joana, the athlete and the municipality exchanged certificates of recognition. She also presented Mayor António Pina with a Portugal team kit and shared her most recent medal. Her coach, Mestre Júlio, praised her determination and ambition, noting that, given her continued success, participation in a future edition of the Games remains a real possibility — a merit he attributes to her unique commitment and competitive spirit.
However, the occasion also highlighted an injustice that cannot go unnoticed: despite her unparalleled track record, Joana Santos has never been welcomed by the President of the Republic. This institutional silence stands in stark contrast to the significance of her sporting achievements.
Mayor António Pina publicly expressed his regret over this lack of recognition and pledged to press the relevant national institutions — from the Government to the Committee — to ensure that Joana finally receives the acknowledgement she deserves. “Joana honours Faro, honours Portuguese sport and honours the country. The least Portugal owes her is the same recognition afforded to any elite athlete,” he stressed.
The Municipality of Faro also points out that Deaflympic athletes continue to face profound inequalities, notably in prize allocations, which remain misaligned with those granted to Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The Council therefore reiterates the need to create better conditions — locally and nationally — to ensure fairness and dignity in the preparation and recognition of these athletes.
The City Council once again expresses its admiration and pride in Joana Santos, a remarkable example of perseverance, talent and resilience, assuring that Faro will continue to stand by her — on and off the tatami.
