Faro Hosts Launch of “Acessibilidades 2.0” Project to Promote Inclusion for People with Disabilities
On Wednesday, June 26, the Faro Municipal Library hosted the official launch of Acessibilidades 2.0, a forward-looking initiative by Associação Salvador, funded by the Algarve 2030 Programme. The project is designed to enhance inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities, promoting autonomy, equal access to information, and greater opportunities for all.
Significantly, the project includes the development of a Virtual Assistant aimed at improving access to assistive products and essential daily information for people with disabilities. Additionally, the existing Map4Accessibility app will be upgraded, allowing users to actively map and consult real-time accessibility data on public spaces. This user-generated approach encourages civic participation and fosters social equity.
Moreover, Acessibilidades 2.0 will be implemented in partnership with the municipalities of Faro, Lagoa, Loulé, and Portimão. Notably, Faro stands out as the Algarve’s largest social investor in the project. As a result of this commitment, the city will host the national event celebrating the National Accessibility Day, scheduled for October.
Following the launch ceremony, attendees participated in a dynamic panel discussion and a brief field visit to public spaces. There, they witnessed firsthand how seemingly minor obstacles—such as a small pavement bump or a heavy door—can pose serious challenges for people with reduced mobility.
This timely project comes amid growing public awareness and strong local political will to improve accessibility. One of the next steps under consideration is the creation of a Municipal Accessibility Promotion Plan, supported by Associação Salvador. This would represent a key milestone in the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive society.
