Magic of “A Christmas Dream”

Portimão Rekindles the Magic of “A Christmas Dream” with New Festive Attractions by the Riverside

Santa Claus Arrives in the City on December 1

The city of Portimão is counting down to transform once again into a true “Christmas Dream,” featuring a variety of themed areas from December 1 to January 6, in an edition that introduces new festive hubs along the Arade River.

The event celebrates the holiday season and invites families, residents, and tourists to enjoy 37 days of fantasy and joy, with highlights including a nativity scene, Santa Claus, an ice rink, street lighting, and numerous free activities for all ages.

The programme kicks off with the traditional arrival of Santa Claus on December 1, which will also mark the inauguration of the Christmas lights and launch five weeks full of fun and surprises designed to delight both children and adults.

Santa Claus Arrival and Festive Lighting on December 1

Engaging the whole community in the holiday spirit, the official opening of “A Christmas Dream” is set for December 1 with Santa Claus’ highly anticipated arrival and the inauguration of street decorations.

This symbolic moment will illuminate around 50 locations across the municipality, adding color and sparkle to main streets, local businesses, and public spaces. It reinforces a beloved tradition cherished by both residents and visitors who choose Portimão as a destination for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Arade River Sets the Scene for New Festive Hubs

A major novelty of this year’s edition of “A Christmas Dream” is the reorganization of the city’s themed areas, creating new focal points for visitors.

Santa Claus’ House has been relocated to Praça da República, where it will be accompanied by the Ice Rink, forming a welcoming, family-friendly hub that anchors the city’s holiday entertainment.

Meanwhile, the traditional Christmas Market has moved to the former Lota car park, forming a new festive area alongside Santa’s Workshop and the renovated Christmas Stage, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the Arade River.

The stage, located under a heated tent, will host daily performances including music, dance, circus arts, poetry, theatre, magic, puppetry, and clown shows featuring around 500 artists, approximately 80% of whom are Portimão natives or residents, including students and local groups.

Christmas Playground Introduces Indoor Tree-Climbing Adventure

Another exciting addition promises unique experiences for young visitors at Santa’s Workshop, located in the former Lota building. This area remains a space for learning and imagination, offering creative workshops, storytelling sessions, cookie-making, gift-wrapping techniques, and other educational activities.

This year, the space is enhanced with the Christmas Playground, featuring an indoor tree-climbing course and various play zones tailored to different age groups, ensuring children encounter a world of discovery and fun.

In line with the new spatial arrangement, Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes, also overlooking the Arade River, will be beautifully decorated, providing a perfect backdrop for family photo opportunities and memorable visual experiences for residents and visitors alike.

Life-Size Nativity Scene Returns to Largo da Mó

As in previous editions, the Largo da Mó will host the life-size Nativity Scene, a beloved feature cherished for its symbolic significance.

Meanwhile, the festive Christmas Train will circulate between Alameda and the lower city, connecting the various themed areas and inviting families to enjoy all the holiday attractions.

Five Weeks of Holiday Fun for All

Until January 6, Epiphany, the municipality will offer 37 days of festive entertainment across multiple iconic locations in the three parishes of the municipality, each with its own program of Christmas activities.

With a diverse programme catering to different audiences, the City of Portimão aims to provide a unique experience of holiday magic and Christmas spirit, with particular attention to young visitors and ensuring everyone can fully enjoy this true “Christmas Dream.”

This edition offers multiple attractions designed to energize the city, creating focal points for both residents and visitors who choose Portimão as their holiday destination.
