Faro’s Municipal Police

Faro´s municipal police have begun operations. Officers will focus on community policing and maintaining visibility throughout the municipality. Operational headquarters located at Praça da Liberdade (Pontinha)

The Faro Municipal Police began operations in mid-April with the inauguration of its operational headquarters, located in the former Café Chocolate building at Praça da Liberdade (Pontinha).

This municipal police force, which will work in close cooperation with the PSP (Public Security Police) and GNR (National Republican Guard), has as its main mission the promotion of safety and the protection of residents’ well-being. It prioritises community-based policing and high visibility throughout the municipality, including the islands.

Currently operating with a staff of 10 officers, the Faro Municipal Police will work under a single schedule. In the future, the goal is to expand to full coverage—seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

At this stage, the Faro Municipal Police will focus on community engagement and maintaining a visible presence, particularly in the context of public events, commerce, schools, and among vulnerable populations (such as the elderly and children). Over the coming months, this municipal force is expected to gradually take on new tools and responsibilities, including traffic control and enforcement of municipal regulations, among others.

To support this development, the Municipality of Faro is also conducting an external recruitment process to hire new municipal officers. The Municipal Police is expected to have a full operational staff of 30 officers. Admitted candidates are scheduled to begin training at the start of the summer.

After a lengthy process, the Municipality of Faro is pleased to announce the official launch of the Faro Municipal Police. This local force, working in close coordination with national security services, will help meet the municipality’s security challenges and contribute to a safer, more orderly city.
