Lagos Museum Accredited by the Portuguese Museum Network

The accreditation ceremony took place in Braga on November 4, during the annual meeting of the Portuguese Museum Network (RPM). The certificate and the plaques to be installed at the Slavery Route and Dr. José Formosinho units were received by Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos, and Elena Morán, Director of the Lagos Museum.

This accreditation and integration represent official recognition—by order of the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports—of the Lagos Museum’s technical quality and compliance with museological standards. It concludes a process initiated in December 2023 with the submission of the application, followed by the technical visit carried out by RPM specialists in October 2024, acknowledging the team’s effort and professional excellence.

The museum’s requalification solidified a multi-site structure, developing and programming complementary historical and chronological themes within its monuments and emblematic buildings. Notable units include the Slavery Route, inaugurated in 2016; the Dr. José Formosinho unit, reopened in 2021; and the Documentation Centre, reorganized that same year.

The process also enabled a progressive reorganization and inventorying of the museum’s collections and enhanced public accessibility through the “Lagos Museum Digital” platform, available since May 2025.

As a community-based territorial museum, the Lagos Museum has grown through its commitment to research and the development of activities tailored to diverse audiences, driven by the expertise of its technical staff.

Within this strategic framework, work is underway on the expansion of the Dr. José Formosinho unit, the requalification of the Ponta da Bandeira fort museum unit, and the construction of the Rural World unit in Odiáxere. Since 2024, this site has hosted cultural mediation work in artistic residence within the local community, including the “Invisible Water” project and the “Ephemeral Museum,” which opened to the public this year from October 17 to 19.
