Lagos Achieves Its Best-Ever Result in the ECO XXI Programme
The municipality of Lagos once again stood out on the national sustainability landscape by achieving a final score of 86.4% in the 2025 edition of the ECO XXI programme—the highest result since the municipality first joined the initiative.
This year’s edition saw the participation of 61 candidate municipalities. The score represents an increase of 4.7% compared to 2024, allowing Lagos to return to the tier of municipalities scoring above 80% and to consolidate the positive progress of the work developed in this field.
At regional level, Lagos was the highest-ranked municipality in the Algarve and secured 14th place in the national ranking.
The award ceremony took place on 12 December at the Mafra National Palace, where the municipality received the ECO XXI Green Flag.
Based on a comprehensive set of indicators covering areas such as environmental education, waste management, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility and spatial planning, among others, the ECO XXI programme—promoted by ABAAE (the Blue Flag Association for Environment and Education)—aims to promote, publicise and recognise good sustainability practices, policies and actions at local level, distinguishing municipalities that show a strong commitment to integrated sustainable development.
