The Lagos City Council has approved the allocation of municipal buildings to the Lagos Study Center (CEL) and the Friends of Lagos Group (GAL) two local associations dedicated to promoting non-formal education, reflection, and debate—initiatives regarded as vital for social cohesion and cultural vitality.
The decision, made through the signing of commodatum agreements, comes in parallel with the termination of the current contracts that regulate the use of the facilities where both associations are presently based.
The Lagos Study Center (CEL) will be moving into the former Anti-Tuberculosis Service building—widely known as the “Dispensary”—on Rua Dr. José Cabrita (Rossio de S. João). The venue offers the space and accessibility required to expand CEL’s activities, including the development of its “Senior University” project, set to launch in the upcoming academic year.
Meanwhile, the Friends of Lagos Group (GAL) will take up residence in the historic Manueline Window building on Rua Henrique Correia da Silva, near the Lagos Museum. This property had until now been used by CEL. As a result, GAL will permanently vacate the premises it had been occupying for several years on Rua Cândido dos Reis.
These decisions reflect the municipality’s ongoing strategy to manage its real estate assets by assigning them new purposes and uses. The aim is not only to prevent degradation or vacancy of public buildings but also to support the needs of local associations across cultural, sporting, recreational, and social spheres.
